Esko, the No. 4 seed in Section 7AAA, beat the No. 5 seed Hibbing by 2 points at home to reach the section semifinals. It was 45 degrees with fog at kickoff in Esko, with a light wind out of the east-southeast at 3 mph.
Esko advances to face No. 1 seed Pierz in a section semifinal Saturday at 2 p.m.
Hibbing allowed 99 points over its last three games coming in, despite a season average of 21 allowed and a shutout; its biggest win was 61-0 over Proctor/Maris Academy, and its only loss to a seeded team was 35-0 to #7 Pequot Lakes.
Esko allowed just 48 points over its last three games and its best win of the season came against #7 Pequot Lakes, 19-12; it had no losses to seeded teams this season. The two met earlier this season too, with Esko winning 22-21 on Sept. 18.
Esko has beaten Hibbing in all five meetings between the two since 2010, including the last five in a row, most recently 28-0 a year ago.
